Almost Coached

Post by Magpiespower »

Cornesy said on 7 News' "Memorable Moments" segment that Jack Cahill was poised to coach Glenelg in '83 before signing with Collingwood at the last minute.

What about other "almost-coaching" appointments?

Jim Deane should've coached Port in 1950 but the club had to settle for "second best" when South refused to clear him...

Kevin Sheedy was almost going to coach Centrals prior to his Essendon appointment.

John Todd and Woodville?

What was the story there?

Appointed at West Coast instead?

Re Cahill nearly at Glenelg, that would have been interesting to say the least.

I reckon Ebert applied for Glenelg position in the 90's, although not sure that he was close to securing the position.

Didn't John Todd take the Woodville job only to knock it back when the Weagles gig came up?

Can remember Ebert talking about coaching Norwood on 5AA sometime in the mid-90s.

As for Cahill coaching The Bays - thank f@%k he crossed the border!

It took Herb a while to realise coaching wasn't his thing, despite 4 magareys ...

I think Geoff Motley was going to move to Glenelg as playing coach in the early 60's, but Port wouldn't clear him. 1962 maybe.

IIRC reading a newspaper article, John Cahill said he received a letter of approach during the 1981 season from the Glenelg board. He said he would have loved to coach the team they had and he would have taken it up, except the Bays were top at the time, and if they were willing to go behind their current coach's back while they were top, how could he ever trust them or be safe in his job.

Port weren't a top side in 87 though.

With the 3 premierships from 88 to 90, the PAFC and Cahill were vindicated.

On the rise but. Lots of talent that Ebert blooded was coming good. And we did finish second at the end of the minor round.

Still cursing those five posters in the two-point first-semi loss against Glenelg. Especially Abba's at the death. ARRGGGHHHHH!

And to be fair, Ebert coached Port at a pretty rocky time off the field.

But yeah, can't argue with a hat-trick of premierships!

With more to come...

Ruthless!

Always wondered if this went back to '82 when Ebert's burning ambition to coach had him to linked to just about every vacant job in the land.

Was Jack perhaps nudged out to keep the club's greatest player/legend/icon at Alberton?

Jarrod Cotton almost coached Port this year. In hindsight he should have taken it, seeing as though he could only last 5 or 6 rounds working with Bass again.

How much was it paying?

Surely it would be more than the reserves job at Norwood?

You would think but a former Sturt coach who is now an assistant at another club used to complain about how much he was not paid at Sturt as Senior Coach until he made enquiries re the Port job and hung up once he was told the $$$.

I dont know Luke Norman, but given the way he finished with Sturt I am assuming he wouldnt have been an appealing option. I am aware of the range they were looking to pay for the role, and it doesnt compare with what Godden or Francou are probably getting but it really isnt that bad. Its a big commitment coaching an SANFL league side, but you dont just do it for the money.

Re Norman - I would have been surprised if he would have been under seriuous consideration HAD he applied for the PAFC job however who would have picked McGregor and the mail is that he was the only one willing to take the paltry $$$ on offer along with a 1 year deal due to the AFL Reserves issue looming. He might get another year yet! :D
