History of ANZAC Day Grand Final replay
Hi guys, just wondering if you could settle a bet...when were the Grand Finalists, from the previous year, awarded the honour of playing the ANZAC Day games. I thought it has been this way for a long time...friend thinks mid 90's. Ta.

Re: History of ANZAC Day Grand Final replay
So Friday was North's first win in an Anzac Day rematch in 53 years. And I was at both games. That is a long time between victories.

Off topic I know, but I often wonder why such strong teams fall away the next season. Sturt were almost unbeatable in 78, but I've got the feeling they fell way off that level in 79?

They kept getting Des Foster in games...
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

1954 match mentioned above can't have been a GF replay as West Torrens won '53 Premiership.

Re: History of ANZAC Day Grand Final replay
Just the other day watched the 1982 Anzac day game between Port and Glenelg, well the one hour highlights package of the game as shown on seven that day. On a good old beta tape too-loved it! What a roler coaster ride, with Port snatching a draw after the siren.
No Surrender!

The 1954 West should actually be West Torrens, that is the match. It actually wasn't played on the 25th, but the Monday holiday the following day. The first time a Sunday Anzac Day match was held was in 2010, The years when there were no 25th of April matches after 1947 (the first being in 1948) are: 1948, 1954, 1965, 1971, 1976, 1982, 1993, 1999 and 2004.

Amazingly Centrals had the same record in these matches as G/F with losses to the same teams but in different years

Re: History of ANZAC Day Grand Final replay
Didn't want to start a new topic (yet), or clog up one of spell_check's playing list topics with this question, but is there a resource that lists all the SANFL players who died at war, or as a result of it?
According to the link below, there is no record of SANFL players who were killed during (or as a result) of war and I had no luck googling for it.
https://www.adelaidenow.com.au/anzac-ce ... 827fde4dfd
The AFL has this: https://www.afl.com.au/news/40720/playe ... ar-ww1-ww2 and Port Adelaide have an article here: https://www.portadelaidefc.com.au/news/ ... len-heroes
With the comprehensive lists of players spell_check and Mark Beswick have put together (apologies if there are others who have assisted), I guess it would be possible to piece this together.
spell_check or any others, do you know if a list such as this has been done? I did a brief search, but couldn't find a topic on this forum.

I didn't know that any SANFL League footballers had died in Vietnam, but Peter Chant who played about 10 games for Port in the early 1960s was killed there in 1969.
Also, all deaths in war are extremely sad, but I have always thought that Max (Bobby) Carmichael's death was very poignant. He was killed in Bougainville on July 2nd, 1945 which was 2 months after the War in Europe had ended and 5 weeks before the war in the Pacific had ended.

Sturt have the Names of 5 players who died in WW1 painted on the steps of the players race as a memorial. Can't find any official details of this or WW2 onwards, but there is a facebook article with a little history.
