warner and rogers both average more than 40 (just) and steve smith i think we can all agree is rapidly heading there after a slowish start.
warner would probably make the world team opening the batting on form at the moment.
rogers finished third in test player of the year and scored the most runs out of anyone across the 10 ashes tests.
agree with the rest of your assessment though. I think that happens regularly when a team goes downhill, they clutch at straws trying to recapture their success. england are doing the same thing. if they were winning joe root would have been in the side the whole time no questions.
i do think people like white and hughes deserve another crack at it though, they are some of the few that are consistently averaging 45+ at shield level (well white in the last few years)
