Port v Sturt - Post Match wrap up

Post by Booney »

Port 19.12 126
Sturt 11.10 76

Port hit the lead early with 2.4 and about 8 inside 50's before Sturt hit the scoreboard with a couple of quick goals, from there it was a pretty scrappy affair at times. Port had a few injuries after half time and the third quarter was an absolute snooze fest as Port played "keepies off" to limit the amount of transition play, giving those in the midfield very short stints on the bench with rotations limited. Wasn't very attractive play for the third quarter.

Not many highlights, I think it was Coad who took a screamer in the goal square at the Northern End, Biemans was excellent for Port all day along with Clurey who kept Duldig pretty much out of the game.

Paul Stewart, Jake Neade and Ben Newton ( probably BOG again ) were also important for the 'Pies.

Kirkwood, Tambling and Coad were all consistent performers for the Double Blues.

Right on half time Henry Slattery found a Blues players ( apologies as I missed who it was ) turning blind out of a pack and Slattery hit him hard, looked to be shoulder to shoulder with a clash of heads leaving the Sturt player flat out and needing to be stretchered off while Slattery was also worse for wear, neither player appeared for some time after half time. This was about the only time the crowd got involved throughout the day. Sturt fans I'm sure were taken back to the old "bloody Alberton Oval" days as they stood as one to give Port a vocal send off at half time.

Port stacked up the possessions and brushed aside what was a reasonably decent Sturt side with ease. No surprise at the result.

The Magpies have gone from a decade of mediocrity to utter dominance of the competition in the space of a few months. The change in coach from Kenny to Buddha has obviously had an extraordinary effect and i should take my hat off to them.....

Back to the game - is Slattery in big strife?

But it does beg the question, how good is "Buddha" Hocking? Is it too early to tell or is it such a bastard system that no one thinks it's a question worth answering or even a legitimate question at all? Strange times in SANFL.

Didn't hear a lot of this game due to watching Glenelg, but it certainly sounded like another pretty dominant performance from Port, apart from Sturt coming out and kicking 4 of the first 5 goals of the second quarter. Interesting to see if anything comes of the incident on half time!

Once the Power get a couple of injuries and then the Power reserves get a couple of injuries they will come back to the pack in the 2nd half of the year. At the moment the Power have a near full squad to pick from but take say 4 Power players out of the Power reserves side and they will not be winning by 8+ goals.

Sturt unfortunatly gave away a number of free kicks and turnover goals in the first half. Matched the Power players for patches of each quarter but couldnt sustain it all game. Can't fault the effort or endevour of the boys all day.

Slattery in a lot of trouble. "blind turned out of a pack"  Try, recieved a handball out of a pack and was lined up as he gave a quick handball. Umpire right there, instand report. Gone.

Not fussed about losing, boys tried hard against the pros. Feed kept dropping out so didn't stick around to listen to broken coverage. Been a habit of rph lately.

Too bad about jack Stephens as he is turning into a gun defender.

Back to real sanfl competition next week vs west.

Handball came out to Stephens from a pack, Stephens jumped and took the ball above his head, he then turned to exit ( with the traffic from in front of him closing in ) and as he turned Slattery got him. For mine, he turned to go where he came from, so unless he has eyes in the back of his head it was blind. Ergo, blind turn.

Roll, roll, roll yourself.

Poor crowd between two old rivals.....well between Sturt and a pimped out whore that they choose to call the Magpies.

Think it just proves Port supporters care more about their mothers than Sturt supporters ... :)

Slattery bump at 27:20. Interesting no Sturt players remonstrated until well after the event.

Their first concern appears to be in the welfare of Stephens, then some of them turn their attention to Slattery.

What good would it have done if a few of them did get stuck into Slattery? Probably be joining him tomorrow night for a date with the tribunal.

That's why the score is settled later ... either in the carpark or in the pub
