So if the Queensland and New Souith Wales clubs can play in a competition that transcends state borders why cant the South australian teams? Surely the Crows and Power have more money than the non traditional clubs in those states. Its pretty much the same plane flight yeah? Adelaide - Melbourne as Brisbane to Sydney

Hmmm, maybe their motives extend to destroying the AFL's biggest rival, rather than just needing a competition to play in?

Or perhaps it's a sign of how willing the AFL is to invest money in expansion while saving money in areas that have supported the game (rather than any one individual league) for over hundred years?

This
The AFL has no interest in a national reserves comp when all "reserves" teams are playing in a State league, this is a much cheaper option.
it can spend money elsewhere, Womens league, development markets (QLD Western Sydney), AFL listed players salaries, corporate junkets, international rules, meatloaf....
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

Yep, 100% agree. I think other factors are (a) the state leagues are scared of abandoning their subservient role to the AFL for fear of becoming irrelevant, and don't want to leave even if given the choice (as we saw threes years ago), and (b) the AFL would much prefer to have its fingers in as many competition pies as possible to create the (false) impression it is the governing body that represents the interests of the entire code, as opposed to one of several state competitions across the nation that re-badged itself with a national name and cultivated the biggest profile.
As far as the AFL are concerned, the reserves sides in state comps works well for them. Not broken, don't fix it. From a business point of view, I can understand that. As a body that is meant to govern the code, it's shit because it demonstrates a lack of respect for the comps that have their own history and tradition, made the game what it is in other states, and produced players as good as the VFL, and were certainly better managed financially.

Re: The never ending No AFL in the SANFL whinge thread
Nobody cares about the integrity of the NEAFL. it only kicked off in 2011 so who in NSW/QLD gives a shit about that?
With Brisbane, Gold Coast and GWS ( all AFL run ) in there why would the AFL change that?
The biggest cost impost, the Victorian based sides have the VFL working for them. Why send up to 6 or 8 sides flying out of Victoria each week?
So, put that into perspective and it's the two WA and two SA based clubs who are the most likely to want an AFL reserves. 4 out of 18 clubs. It isn't going to happen.

Easy fix: ramp up the price to 1m, and charge the same to the smears. They don't pay, We don't play.
Watch them both trip over each other as they race across the border to the VFL.

.
The following (sourced from Wikipedia) does a fair job of describing the carnage around the formation of the NEAFL (which, lets face it , has been created purely for the convenience of the 4 AFL Reserves teams) Traditional Aussie Rules competitions and their rich histories left in tatters in its wake.
"A major restructure of the league was announced for the 2014 season. Five clubs left the competition and the conference system was abolished. Broadbeach, Labrador, Morningside and Mt. Gravatt joined a re-constructed Queensland Australian Football League, while Tuggeranong went back to the AFL Canberra Division One competition.[2] The possibility of a North Queensland side entering the competition for 2014 was considered but ruled out.[3]
Due to the financial challenges of participating in the competition and a proposal from the AFL for the existing Canberra clubs to contribute to a single Canberra team, Belconnen, Queanbeyan and the Sydney Hills Eagles chose to leave the NEAFL at the end of the 2014 season.[4][5] The ongoing desire by the AFL for a single Canberra team led Ainslie to withdraw at the end of the 2015 season. Both Canberra clubs - Ainslie and Eastlake - had a NEAFL licence until the end of 2016, but Ainslie withdrew from the competition after the AFL rejected their proposal to be Canberra's sole team from 2017. The AFL wanted Canberra's team to be either a combined Ainslie-Eastlake side or a representative team funded largely by all the local clubs in the Canberra area.[6]
Two teams changed their names prior to the 2016 season. Eastlake's NEAFL side started to play as the Canberra Demons in an attempt to be seen as Canberra's representative team in the NEAFL competition. The club wishes to provide a clear AFL pathway for local talent and to get rid of the baggage between other clubs in the ACT. As part of this decision the team also adopted a blue and gold guernsey for home games, reflecting the territory's traditional colours. The team will still wear Eastlake's red and black colours in away matches.[7] The Greater Western Sydney reserves team became known as the Western Sydney University Giants to reflect the re-branding of the university from University of Western Sydney.[8]
Players win touches, Teams win matches, Clubs win Premierships.

Well it's simple really.
AFL do not want an AFL reserves side so the fact Adelaide would need to fork out $500k for it is mute as it is not their decision.
SANFL agreed to have Adelaide in the SANFL at $400k and Adelaide accepted.

Except there were talks at VFL level last year and the general consensus is the clubs would vote no to accepting the Crows and Power. The VFL clubs don't want to foot the bill to travel interstate and the only way they would be part of it would be if someone stumps up the travel costs

Guess the interlopers will just have to pay the cool mill each then.
Ramp it up by another mill in each annual review of the setup.
