Tried both, save hundreds of dollars with evap, basically a trip to Thailand a year and it deals with 361 days of the year fine and I hate the heat. I love being cool but the two years I lived with refrigerated reverse cycle I couldn't believe the cost difference and that was with solar panels that virtually made all daytime use free! Never ever again.
If I lived in FNQ or the NT I'd definitely consider paying the extra though but a complete waste here.
Would seriously consider it with a 2 storey place too but would never get a 2 storey place ever again after I was 19.

Nup, that's why they all just have open plan and big arse fans moving the air around.
Cold dry air inside and hot wet air outside. Your skin would be in all sorts of bother. You'd walk outside after being inside and you'd be wet from head to toe in sweat in minutes.
