R4 Eagles v North Sunday 2.10PM

Both sides belted their opponents last week. A fitting game for ANZAC day.

North's win was nothing short of astonishing last week while the Eagles won their match comfortably over Adelaide.

North should have everyone who played last week available while the Eagles should also have Poole, Lonergan and Troy Menzel available for selection.

Tyson Stengle who made a comeback to football last week after being given yet another opportunity by the Eagles for which he says has turned his life around and will be forever grateful has announced that he will repay them by hopefully leaving mid season will be hard to stop and I think North will have to consider tagging him.

The Eagles looked to have recruited as well as anyone which shows the nous of the club as a whole and Sheedy's ability to develop players within a winning structure. I for one thought they would struggle to play finals (based on their player losses) and this will be the game that shows where they are.

I can see 5 reasons why either side should win. North supporters especially the GOD squad need to be on better behavior after causing a near riot last week at Norwood by throwing a cup on the ground and saying unkind things. Eagles supporters should only bring up the 19th man reference until an hour after the game.

Home ground advantage sways me and I think the Eagles by 3 goals one behind.

Eagles coach Jade Sheedy has plenty to ponder ahead of his team’s Anzac Day clash with North at Maughan Thiem Kia Oval.

One change will need to be made with recruit Dane McFarlane sidelined with a calf complaint.

Angus Poole has recovered from a hamstring strain while Troy Menzel has been cleared from his concussion protocol.

They have been added to the extended interchange bench with ruckman Jarrad Redden, who gained valuable match fitness in the Reserves last round while defender Rory Lehmann was also included.

North could include a forgotten premiership player for its Anzac Day contest against the Eagles at Maughan Thiem Kia Oval.

Utility Sam McInerney could play his first League match since Round 18, 2019 after making his comeback from a series of back issues.

The 2018 premiership goal scorer has been joined in the Roosters’ 25-man squad by Dakota Nixon and potential debutant Kaine Mercovich.

From Port Fairy in country Victoria, Mercovich is a hardened midfielder measuring in at 179cm and 81kg.

Magarey Medallist Campbell Combe will play his 50th League game.

Tom Mackenzie was a champion of both West Torrens and North Adelaide. A triple Magarey Medallist. I believe he was named in North Adelaide’s Team of the Century, and no doubt, would also be named in West Torrens’ greatest line up of all time too. My Dad came across this when reading a book by Carol Lefevre and wrote the below. Tom Mackenzie and others who served - Lest We Forget.

Remembering Tom MacKenzie

Carol Lefevre’s brilliant ‘The Quiet City’ is an evocative wandering along the roads and lanes of Adelaide’s West Terrace Cemetery. She visits the addresses of people who walked widely diverse paths during their lifetimes. Some lives are marked ostentatiously, others completely unmarked. Towards the end of the book she visits the beautiful military section of the cemetery, the first of its kind in Australia.

She stops at several addresses, one being Light Oval, 8N, Plot 3. It is the grave of Thomas David MacKenzie. Tom MacKenzie was a star of West Torrens Football Club. He was the first player to ever win the coveted Magarey Medal three times; in 1902, 1905 and 1906. He played 200 games, including a mid career three seasons with North Adelaide, before returning to the fold in 1907 and captaining West Torrens from 1911 to 1913. He lived at Southwark (Thebarton) and worked at the Islington Railway ‘Shops’.

Tom joined the AIF in July 1915 and by June 1916 was in France on his way to the Battle of Fromelles, where the Australian casualty rate was 75%. He was one of those casualties. I will let Carol Lefevre beautifully reawaken events of a century ago.

‘I have never seen a photograph of a First World War soldier that was not beautiful. Youth in itself is beautiful, I think, but being identically dressed the eye is drawn toward the faces and they seem to shine with the luminosity of doomed youth.

Thirty three year old Tom MacKenzie, fairest and most brilliant in the football field, was one of the doomed, and family and friends were shocked when he was reported killed in action. He had been wounded by shellfire and left among the dead on the battlefield. But a stretcher bearer, who happened to be a West Torrens supporter recognised his club’s captain and on closer inspection discovered that Tom MacKenzie was still alive. The football fan carried him to safety and in 1919 Tom MacKenzie was able to return to Adelaide where he supported his old team and became a life member of the SANFL.

But like so many other returned soldiers his experiences in France eventually caught up with him and his death as a result of war related injuries came in 1927. In 1996 Tom MacKenzie was inducted into the Australian Football Hall of Fame.’
