I saw one tackle on Thursday night where they applied the "new" rule - then............................

Players can still go around the world 1+ times and no HTB
I still say that's why we've seen the emergence of the dump tackle

Exactly. They're trying to dispossess the opponent.
It's what every player got taught at junior level.
Tackle hard to hurt and catch them in possession or dislodge the ball in the tackle.

It's going to be touch footy by the next decade.

People have been saying it will be netball or touch footy for many years but has it become that? No.
Are players getting smarter when they bump and tackle? Definitely.

Just need players to assess a situation in a split second with military precision now, like the Terminator, then all concussion worries will be eradicated
Whoops, there goes another year. Whoops, there goes another pint of beer.

Or players tackle smarter and not try and hurt the opponent like they've been taught all their lives.
The game will move on...not sure some of the rusted on supporters will

Totally agree with this. For me it wasnt the HTB free kicks that were paid, it was the adjustment of the players to move the ball on quicker and not hang onto it. It also some teams sit off a bit knowing the ball would be moved on rather than stacks on the mill.
I would love to know the ball up figures, i imagine they were well down.
Id take it a step further and get rid of prior opportunity, the players will adjust, they always do. But if they were to do this they would have to be strict on a tackle being a good one and not getting into the players back like 50% of the tackles are now.

I know watching my boys play at grassroots level Im very glad that this sort of tackle is being taken out of the game.
I'm not sure what you are reading in here, seems everyone had agreed he was getting weeks.

We will try and get in down from 2 ro 1, however it was clear he was always getting games.

He did wrong, and everyone has agreed on that.
Read my reply. It is directed at you because you have double standards

Whilst at the footy on the weekend saw a senior colt who was playing their first game of seniors twice collect the ball at ground level and then drive their head into the standing opponent looking for a high free kick. They went 1 and 1, got a free and the next one was play on. Bloody dangerous act imo thats going to end up in them getting hurt. I know a coach wouldn't be teaching that but its obvious his seen it on tv and tried to copy.

Not at all.

I just think it's funny you make yourself out in here to be a Society Standards Champion but use terms like unwashed which has multiple meanings, one of which could be offensive to the less fortunate.

Agree with both you blokes about the umpiring and the way the game were played on the weekend.

I didn't notice more or less ball-ups, just called bounced up and a lot quicker, which saved a lot of squabbling on the ground - the umpires were far more decisive between this and HTB. There may have been the occasional HTB which was too quick, but this was a small price to pay for the overall improvement.
There was on instance in the Geel-Rich game where the ball was kicked into a vacant fifty with two players were running back and all the other players, except maybe 1, at least 50 metres behind, and the defender managed to force a ball-up. The umpire waited until a few more players arrived before getting play going. How great would it have been if he had thrown it up straight away, one-on-one? That would stop players and coaches playing a few more players spread out around the ground.

We do need to be careful not to pay the sweater-offs, and so there needs be a small element of time to get rid of the ball.

Hopefully these changes - ball moving on, quicker, more decisive ball-ups or HTB's- will stop those instances of in the backs let go as tackles, and if we get a few, hopefully they stand out like dogs balls that they are in the back.

Change the rule to say if you are caught in possession regardless of no prior opportunity then it's holding the ball.
Or appease the mum's and dads out there to stop head knocks it has to be no tackling. Just touch them.

Interesting in the Harley tackle, once he'd swung him, if he let him go mid swing he might have gone over the fence.
Maybe the ground was the safest option?
The player played on, no concussion so a warning and play on for mine.

I'm waiting for one similar to Marshall, where he gets kneed in the head in a marking contest.
In future if you lift the knee it's a free kick and a report. It'll suit the basket ballers even more.

I have used this example in many a discussion about "duty of care" and protection of the head in all cases

One thing the umpires could watch out for to discourage players sitting off will be when the ball player gets smart enough to not take the ball and tap it in front of himself ala Kevin Bartlett that they pay holding the man when the inevitable tackle comes when the player doesnt have possession. I think there was one case of this i saw on the weekend. I dont mind footy that looks like this, it keeps the ball moving.
Does this rule change play into the hands of a Hardwick coached side, Richmond built their success on keeping the ball moving forward? Suns for the flag?

With the current congestion around stoppages, no one will go for the ball first

You'll always have blokes who'll back themselves to break the tackle.

The congestion has already eased, coaches dont want bees to the honey pot with the likelihood that the ball will be knocked on from the stoppage. Players will hang off a bit and only one will go at the ball.
I agree get rid of prior, if you dont kick or handball its holding the ball, players will adapt and find a way.
