Like it needs to be more difficult to navigate.

I used to have to go pick the missus up from 60 Light Square (eastern side), pull out (and of the carpark) to try and get to the inside lane to be able to meander across to exit heading north back on to Morphett Street at 5:05pm, 3 sets of lights and a bunch of crazies in peak hour.

A father’s plea to all parents after child died in a hot car

A Sydney father who fatally left his three-year-old son in a hot car is advocating for greater awareness of forgotten baby syndrome after another toddler died in eerily similar circumstances this week.

Newaz Hasan’s was going about his morning school and childcare routine in February 2023, when his youngest child Arikh unusually fell asleep in the back seat of the family’s Toyota Corolla.

The silence in the car, something Mr Hasan insisted was an anomaly for the young “chatterbox”, meant the father forgot to drop him to daycare, and instead drove to work.

When Mr Hasan returned to his car parked in Glenfield, in the city’s southwest, where the temperature reached 35C that day, the boy had died.

“Hot weather can put a family upside down,” Mr Hasan said. “Every parent should know forgotten baby syndrome exists and it can happen to anyone”.

In tragically similar circumstances, a 14-month-old girl died in a car at Earlwood on Tuesday when her father forgot to drop her to daycare.

Etienne Ancelet dropped his wife Kim to the train station about 8.30am then, instead of taking their daughter Olivia to the early learning centre, drove home.

Police said the girl was in the car until 5.30pm when Mr Ancelet went to the childcare centre to collect her, only to realise his mistake.

All too familiar with the situation, Mr Hasan wants more people to be aware of a condition that affects the memory, which is also known as “fatal distraction”.

“Kid safety has always been my top priority,” he said. “Before February 2023 (when his child died), if anyone would share with me what I am sharing, I would now have a family as happy as yours.”

Scientists believe forgotten baby syndrome is a condition by short-term memory being impaired by things such as sleep deprivation, exhaustion or illness.

Mr Hasan said “if you are human, or a parent, it can happen to you”.

He said simple steps such as checking the back seat before you leave a vehicle, not taking phone calls in the car or having a childcare provider contact you if your child is not dropped off, could save a life.

Detectives are still piecing together the circumstances surrounding the latest tragedy, and have extensively interviewed little Olivia’s father after he was released from hospital where he was treated for shock.

According to Kids and Cars safety website, 16 children worldwide have died from being left in cars in the past two years.

Mr Hasan said that was 16 too many.

“We all just need to be aware and make simple changes,” he said.

An inquest into Arikh’s death is expected to be held later this year.
Dunno, I’m just an idiot.

As much as I understand your views I wholeheartedly sympathise with the poor bloke here, he has to now live with this mistake for the rest of his life, he has to walk past the child's empty room, look at old photo's, the memories will be there forever and it was all his fault, a lapse in concentration that he cannot ever reverse.

This is a tragedy and nothing that our judgements or the law could ever do that would outweigh the grief and suffering that he now has forever.

I had a quite vigorous discussion about this with the missus yesterday, and she is of the same view as you.

There's no right or wrong, there's only opinions.

About twenty years ago my wife played cricket on a Monday night, I got home from work and it was around 40 degrees and was hesitant about going to cricket as we had a daughter who was about 2 or 3 years old at the time so I suggested I stay home with her instead of dragging her out in the heat.

I gave her dinner and then ran a bath for her, she loved the bath and it occupied her for ages, I then went into the lounge nearby and left the door open while I watched the cricket on TV. I all of a sudden dozed off for God knows how long and then suddenly awoke to absolute silence.

I couldn't hear my daughter so I suddenly jumped up and ran into the bathroom where she was lying on her back motionless with just her chin, mouth and nose not submerged under water. My world flashed before my eyes as I ran in and picked her up only for her to open her eyes startled as I had woken her.

I then dressed her and sat her down with me and held her close to me for the rest of the night until she fell asleep and then I couldn't leave her out of sight.

I rang my wife and asked if shew could come straight home after her game to which she obliged so I told her the events when she arrived, I was an absolute mess and had nightmares and flashbacks for a long time.........................and I was fortunate.

My eyes still water whenever I picture that moment, I have never forgiven myself despite nothing happening, it probably made me the over-protective parent that I am today.

Did something similar after my lad's huge day out. He went and had a bath, he would've been about 8. We went about whatever we were doing and thought - 'we haven't heard anything from that end of the house for a while'. Turns out, he'd fallen asleep with nose and mouth out of the water, on his back, still as. I went in and could see he was breathing and so I started taking a video of him. I called out his name a few times and he didn't respond. Even though I knew he was breathing, you can see in the video that I started panicking when he didn't respond. Seriously, it wouldn't take much for a disaster to occur and we would've been beside ourselves.

Coming home tonight, stopped at Drakes to pick up some lunch stuff for tomorrow for my lad and wife

300g Ham
Bbq chicken
6 rolls

Comes to $91.37

Me- err I don’t think that’s right.

Ham on the wrapper from service deli was $8.19, scanned $78.49
Rolls $3.25 scanned as banana bread $6.95

Fixed it quickly but I wonder how many times this occurs.

Will make me check my dockets in future

She just scanned them, just autonomous response to the total. She was good about it and did apologise.

I paid cash, I wonder if it was tap a card whether I or others would have noticed. Don’t really pay as much attention when I tap.

You pay the amount, get your receipt, then take it back to customer services counter. Then you get the items for free.

Don’t feel bad for Woolies, Coles etc, they make squillions of dollars so can afford to pay for their errors.

That's why I always go out through the supermarket self-scan areas. I check the prices as they come up and if there is an occasional error call over the duty staff standing near the entrance. Errors are rare in that situation. In other shops I look at the receipt before I move away from the checkout.

Way back in the late 1970s I noted a lot of younger shop staff could not mentally check the hand calculater they used. I rember one newsagency where I bought some Biros and paper and the hand calculator the staff used came up with a ridiculously high figure. I said that was wrong and added it up (out loud) in my head and she just said. "OK I believe you!" and charged my what I said was the correct total. She had no idea what it should have been and just trusted the error in the calculator then accepted my version.
