the nightmare you will have is they let you know at 4pm the day prior whether you are required to go in or not (if you aren't on a case). Was hard for me as i have meetings almost every day across the city so i couldnt pre-plan anything

Can explain the situation and they will let you off - it is actually pretty easy to get out of. The month i deffered (at the last minute) i had a funeral in the first week of the month. That was enough to get out of it fully if i wanted too. They don't check or anything either so you can make something like that up and you are fine

I think with my work I can get away with the short notice, but its not ideal

Working for yourself is a legitimate reason to be excused.

By the way, not having a reasonable excuse and just ignoring the call up can result in 3 months in the clink plus fines.
Dunno, I’m just an idiot.

Depends on the court and jurisdiction, some or more punitive than others.

It’s all a head faaark that most people don’t need. Good luck trying to navigate through it.

I wonder, would that offence require a trip to a court, and trial by jury?

Anyone had to be a witness in a trial before? I was meant to be, got prepped by the detectives etc for hours leading in, turned up to court, waiting outside and with 5 mins to go we get advised the prick is pleading guilty and I wont be required, which was a relief but very frustrating also to have the anxiety for weeks leading up to it.

I have a few times for civil cases
I am quite at ease when public speaking but sitting there like a fish in a barrel is not my idea of fun.

I do like to sit in the gallery and watch interesting cases.
It really puts the barristers off when you do it.
One of them always asks who you are.
"No-one - just watching" - that really gets to them
