Re: SANFL Junior codes
Disappointing to hear that Glenunga U18 girls are forfeiting their Second Semi Final clash due to a lack of numbers.
Equally disappointing to hear is that they went to the league during the week to seek permits for a couple of their U16 girls (who, coincidentally, finished bottom but still had to play finals!), but were refused.
Hard to fathom the league would rather see teams forfeit a final than grant permits.

That is very disappointing to hear from the SANFL, I thought they would want to make sure every one gets a gameMoP wrote:Disappointing to hear that Glenunga U18 girls are forfeiting their Second Semi Final clash due to a lack of numbers.

I say that sarcastically because if you played say 12's and 13's all year so your 13's team doesn't have to forfeit, and both teams make finals, you are unable to play both. If you've played most of your year in the 12's, you can't play 13's finals. So the 13's may have to forfeit because the 12's made finals and players can't play both. Would you consider that fair?

Re: SANFL Junior codes
That's exactly what happened with the Glenunga U18's. The Club decided to field a women's team this season, so ALL of last year's U18 girls moved up to seniors. A lot of U16's then moved up to fill the void in U18's, but there were only about 18-19 in the squad. With injuries, unavailability, etc, they rarely had the required 16, so had some 16's fill in on occasions. Despite the 16's finishing BOTTOM, they still had to play finals, meaning they were unable to play finals for the 18's. Hence the forfeit in the second semi final.gadj1976 wrote: They do. Re: SANFL Junior codes
Our 17.5's had the same situation - 4 or 5 kids doubling up each week. We were not allowed permits, but when we made SANFL aware that we would not have a full side, they allowed 1 permit to get us to 18 players.
I'm surprised / sceptical that they wouldn't afford the same grace to Glenunga.
As for the rule, initially frustrated, but I suspect and believe the rule came in because of clubs exploiting it - doing enough to qualify a few very talented kids for finals, then come finals loading up with those talented players.
I'm sure every team would be filthy if they rolled up to finals and suddenly the oppo had x6 guns from a development squad fronting up... especially in one of the lower divisions.

I believe Glenunga have been told they will be given permit/s this week, if required, to make numbers up to 16.The Bedge wrote:Our 17.5's had the same situation - 4 or 5 kids doubling up each week. Re: SANFL Junior codes
This is the madness I don't understand. What purpose would that serve, playing 16's when bottom, versus playing for the 18's? The answer to that is that the SANFL make you play in the div you've played most games for - in your case being the 16's.MoP wrote:That's exactly what happened with the Glenunga U18's. Re: SANFL Junior codes
Every (what we consider, dumb) rule is in place because clubs previously exploited it. That's what we're left with unfortunately. The Bedge wrote:Our 17.5's had the same situation - 4 or 5 kids doubling up each week. Re: SANFL Junior codes
Looking at the season, Glenunga 18s played first week of finals and won, with 18 players?
I'm confused how you had to forfeit week 2 for lack of players - did you have 7 players injure themselves?!

Re: SANFL Junior codes
Anyway, in other news, congrats to our U14 girls on making the grand final this weekend.
Only the second season the side has been together - plenty doubted me before last season when I said I was going to make it happen. Started Div 5, made an elimination final, this year promoted to Div 3 earlier in the season and now made it to the GF - huge growth.
Proud of my daughter too, managed to string together back to back (almost) 40 goal seasons (39 and 38).. but very chuffed to see the group of girls I coached during the jnr mixed age stuff having really strong seasons.

Re: SANFL Junior codes
Well done Bedge, the best bit about coaching kids isn't the actual coaching, it is following their journey after you have been their coach and to see them still loving the game.
As for the conversation around permits, that seems crazy, in the country as long as you are not an over ager you can play up a grade in finals without playing any games previously.
And SANFLJ allowed Blackwood kids to play u16 HFL on Saturdays and u17.5's on Sunday's, I know 2 separate comps but isn't that pretty much the same thing?

Back-to-back 6-goal games is pretty fair going for anyone, let alone girl's footy. The Bedge wrote:Anyway, in other news, congrats to our U14 girls on making the grand final this weekend.
