Re: Things that make you sad.
The young cricketer who was accidentally struck in the neck during a nets session has tragically passed away.
Victorian community cricket has been numbed by the death of a promising Ferntree Gully player described as an “awesome young man’’.
Ben Austin, 17, was struck on the neck by a ball and collapsed in the nets at Walley Tew Reserve in Ferntree Gully on Tuesday night ahead of a Twenty20 match between Ferntree Gully and Eildon Park.
The Rowville Sports Academy student was not listed to play in the game.
After being treated by Ambulance Victoria staff, Ben was taken to Monash Medical Centre and placed on life support.
The Ferntree Gully club and association announced his death this morning.
“All of our thoughts, prayers and love are with Ben’s family at a time of unimaginable grief,’’ the association said.
“Ben – who was both talented and popular in local cricket – is an enormous loss to our local community.
“I know how heavily this news will land across our community and we will provide any and all support we can to our clubs and cricket family.
If you want to go quickly, go alone.
If you want to go far, go together.
If you want to go far, go together.

That is extremely sad, just sickening
Having been net captain at grade club for over 10 years have seen players hit and many close calls, always feared a tragedy could happen one day the force players hit the ball these days and players not paying attention.

Life just isn't fair
Playing in the hills there was many a close miss where you didn't pick the ball up in the fading sunlight with trees in the background, you always felt a bit nervous but never thought you could lose your life over it.

So bloody sad.. can't even put into words. Feel for the family and everyone involved.
Makes me angry a little too - we get all sorts of Indian blokes / teams rock up to our nets every night - they're not allowed to use the nets and i'm coaching juniors, but they wont listen and move on, but they think they need to practice T20 and have balls being smashed everywhere.. constantly in fear of one of my kids getting hit.
Again they don't listen "We need to practice our shots". ******* muppets.

Got a tad emotional thinking shit they're just having fun you don't expect to send your child to cricket training and he doesn't come home because of an accident at training.

Used to spend most of high school lunch time in summer in the nets, not sure how we all survived … either had 6 fielding in the nets themselves or would go for the tonk and the ball would lob on the main oval with plenty of random targets to hit without warning.
Dunno, I’m just an idiot.

Spring Gully makes a Lazarus-like return from the dead!Booney wrote:Spring Gully Foods shuts its doors after nearly 80 years of trading
South Australia’s iconic and family-owned company, Spring Gully Foods, has gone into administration and stopped trading, with debts of nearly $4m.
James McPherson, of Meertens, was yesterday appointed administrator – more than a decade after the public last rallied to save the food company from collapsing.
After nearly 80 years in operation, Mr McPherson said he would look to sell the business assets, which could involve a takeover of the brand, but all staff had been let go.
“I had a look and the business was unable to continue trading, so when I stepped into it yesterday all employees were terminated,” Mr McPherson said.
“There were 22 full-time/part-time employees, of a total workforce of 34.”
Known for its jams, chutneys, sauces and pickles, Mr McPherson said there were a number of reasons as to why the company went into administration.
“The primary one was loss of contracts, which essentially resulted in significant loss of revenue and when that happens there was a corresponding fall in gross profit, so they’re struggling to meet overheads,” he said.
“It suffered from overseas competition, really. People are looking to buy cheaper.”
The company, led by Russell Webb, Kevin Webb and Tegan Hack, has outstanding debts of $3.8m owed to unsecured creditors, of which there is more than 1000, Mr McPherson said.
All company taxes and superannuation to employees were up-to-date, with annual leave and long service entitlements to be paid in the future, Mr McPherson said.
In 2013, the award-winning fourth-generation company went into voluntary administration with debts to unsecured creditors of $4.9m.
Unprecedented support from shoppers saw Spring Gully items fly off the shelves and the company lift its turnover to $1.5m one week following the announcement.

It won't be SA-owned, but I imagine it will remain SA-based - and will keep on churning out those mustard pickles.

But it would not acquire Spring Gully’s production line assets. The group’s Dry Creek-based plant and equipment would be auctioned off in December in an attempt to recoup debts, reportedly totalling about $4 million.

Re: Things that make you sad.
I report to the Branch Manager in SA/WA/NT, he sits at a desk 3m from mine.
Recently our GM got shifted sideways into National Sales Manager role ( demotion ) and a new GM has started. His LinkedIn profile lists "organizational restructuring" as one of his key skills.
Over several months they (executive / board ) have been, in real terms, aresholing my Manager out the door. He's had a break down, he's caused himself to be unwell with the worry and they're about to go into an unfair dismissal / constructive dismissal proceedings.
Watching what the global corporation has done to the man who I have worked alongside for 18 years and who has afforded me the guidance and mentorship to get to my earning capacity to where it is and afford my family the security we have is heart breaking. It's not my doing. I cannot change any of it and they're going to want me, someone who has witnessed this, to move into his role or at least take on some of his role.
I've got two weeks of work, 3 weeks leave over Xmas, 5 weeks to consider my own future.
It's been disgusting to watch and I'm pretty sure I don't want to work for these people.
