Also, if you cash in all your points to get a player, why are you allowed back in the draft?

Bid: Pick No.5, value 1795 points, 1616 points after 10 per cent discount
Would need: Picks 29, 30, 34 and 35

And I'm right in saying that the club that loses the bidding war, receives those picks highlighted above?

Thanks Booney that's a good explanation.

Don't think picks just disappear and the club who loses is simply bumped a spot back?

As reported by AFL.com.au, the League is set to introduce even tighter restrictions again for 2026, ( just in time for Port to get Cochrane at pick 1) but has opted against preventing clubs matching bids at the top of the draft.

Details of the changes for 2026 and beyond and set to be announced soon.

How Brisbane matched bid for Levi Ashcroft in 2024

Bid: Pick No.5, value 1878 points, 1502 points after 20 per cent discount
Used: Picks 40, 42, 43 and 46

How a club could match a similar bid in 2025

Bid: Pick No.5, value 1795 points, 1616 points after 10 per cent discount
Would need: Picks 29, 30, 34 and 35

How Brisbane matched bids for Levi Ashcroft and Marshall in 2024

Bids: Picks No.5 and 25, value 2634 points, 2107 points after 20 per cent discount
Used: Picks 40, 42, 43, 43, 44 and 46

How a club could match similar bids in 2025

Bids: Picks No.5 and 25, value 2385 points, 2147 points after 10 per cent discount
Would need: Picks 29, 30, 34, 35, 38 and 39

How Brisbane matched bid for Will Ashcroft in 2022

Bid: Pick No.2, value 2517 points, 2014 points after 20 per cent discount
Used: Picks 34, 35, 38, 40, and 41

How a club could match a similar bid in 2025

Bid: Pick No.2, value 2481 points, 2233 points after 10 per cent discount
Would need: Picks 30, 31, 32, 33, 34 and 41
To stop all these low picks being cobbled together to get a top 10 player like you have mentioned above, the AFL will introduce the rule that only 2 picks can be used on a bid match.
Under those rules let’s say Cochrane gets bid on at 2
Pick 2 = 2481 points minus 10% =2233
So Port now must find 2233 points with only 2 picks
Pick 10 (1276) and
Pick 15 (973) would net them 2249 points.

The big trouble with that is that every other club will know Port need 2 picks around the 10-15 mark and will charge a premium for it and get into a bidding war for it.
Port may have to give up one or more future firsts to get that pick 15.
And yes of course it changes when we have some decent academy kids coming through in the next 2-3 years
