Anyone else remember when the Australian team played 1 day cricket at this time of year in Australia against a touring team?

Yep but no one is interested in it anymore, crowds at ODI's are very poor. The games mean nothing, its all just trials for the next world cup in 4 years.
The ICC needs to make ODIs and T20Is mean something. I think knockout series with seedings played around the world culminating in a Grand Final every year or at the least every 2 years would give it meaning.

Cricket will never be the same.

We're now playing two series per home summer, cramming in an away series before the northern hemisphere winter, a series north of the equator during our winter, cram another series in before our summer, two series in our summer by the second week in January *deep breath* ODI's, T20I's, ODI World Cups, T20 World Cups, then the ******* BBL/IPL/BPL/Who gives a **** BL.

There is most certainly too much of a good thing and this is the perfect example.

I care about the Ashes, beating India, South Africa and New Zealand in Test matches and **** all about the rest. Couldn't give a flying **** about the ODI World Cup.

It is interesting the way this team has been selectors still must have their eye on the likes of Khawaja and Bird to be re-selected, Henriques is a big surprise.

You'd think in terms of opening batsmen someone like Renshaw might of been selected in front of Khawaja but since playing for Australia his form has been underwhelming.
I think Neser deserves to be in there and in regards to Pattinson I agree with your sentiment but he could get injured at any point like during the second half of the Sheffield Shield season.
Riley Meredith played for Aus A against Pakistan earlier in the summer but he is injured (side strain) so it seems as though Bird has taken his spot.

I think when CA began using the ODI's as trials for WC's that added to the interest declining in Australia.. once players were being plucked from the wilderness, or based on potential, or rotating the side every week, or picking what appeared a 3rd string side then the punters gave up on it.

Honestly the national summer program stinks - they squeeze three formats in against a country in the space of a couple of weeks.
