Re: Abbott/Liberal Govt Watch
This Dog act by Bernardi should force us South Australians back to the polls for his seat. He was voted in for what a Liberal Party candidate stood for not what Corey's nut job Party stands for now!

Now he decided he is "independent" he'll spend the next five years plus change suckling on the taxpayer teet, will all the perks that entails. If he was truly a man of his convictions he would have left the Liberal Party prior to the last election and taken his chances then......but no $$$ in that. He is a fraud, who is a greedy little ****er.
Putting aside the opportunity to have a crack (I would do the same thing if it was a Labor senator doing it)
There is nothing in the Constitution about parties
Senators are elected to represent their state, not the party so what he is doing is constitutional
Section 7 of the Australian Constitution reads in part:7. The Senate
The Senate shall be composed of senators for each State, directly chosen by the people of the State, voting, until the Parliament otherwise provides, as one electorate.
But until the Parliament of the Commonwealth otherwise provides, the Parliament of the State of Queensland, if that State be an Original State, may make laws dividing the State into divisions and determining the number of senators to be chosen for each division, and in the absence of such provision the State shall be one electorate.
Until the Parliament otherwise provides there shall be six senators for each Original State. The Parliament may make laws increasing or diminishing the number of senators for each State,5 but so that equal representation of the several Original States shall be maintained and that no Original State shall have less than six senators.
The senators shall be chosen for a term of six years, and the names of the senators chosen for each State shall be certified by the Governor to the Governor-General.
IDGAFF which party you're a member of. Lib, Labor, Green, Dumb Notion....if you're elected under their brand you can't turn around and suddenly say you're independent, especially so close after an election and with absolutely no mitigating circumstances apart from the paranoid voices in your own head.
The irony is Bernadi bangs on about Trump and Brexit and how they are popular because people are sick of typical politicians and yet he'll be sitting in Parliament living high on the tax payers hog, and being the very thing people are supposedly turning away from. DIckhead.

Ah....no, not quite. Have a look at section 15 - casual vacancies, a few references there, particularity about replacing senators.
The system and conventions employed under the Constitution assume the existence of political parties, because it is the party who holds the majority of seats in the lower house that holds legislative power, and they get to pick the prime minister. Don't be fooled by the lack of text in the Constitution - there's no mention of a prime minister either. Taken literally, the GG would be running the show.
I stand corrected
Probably brought in when Joh pulled the swifty
Spot on there, Jimmy.

Re: Abbott/Liberal Govt Watch
I love how some of the Libs came out and tried to really give it to Corey. I daresay though, those that spoke out against him have an all time low credibility rating with the voters anyway.....so the mud they were slinging really doesn't stick imo

My understanding is that Cory has the technicalities of the system on his side, but I have reservations about the moral position.

I think Pauline's effort in Senate yesterday was quite good.
Bearing in mind I only got the edited version from PM Live.

Re: Abbott/Liberal Govt Watch
Is the Libs and Nats relationship on the rocks at the moment. I hear that the WA Liberals have been sleeping around with one nation over there.

Not an easy choice. Do you sleep with Pauline or Barnaby?

Re: Abbott/Liberal Govt Watch
From InDaily:
The former prime minister said the Coalition had become “Labor lite” and politics should not be “just a contest of toxic egos or someone’s vanity project”.
Then shut up. Just shut up.
I think you learn a lot about former leaders after they're finished.
Abbott's no different to Rudd in his pursuit of those who ousted him and his desire to get back in the ring, despite the way he tried to differentiate himself during that period of Rudd/Gillard/Rudd.

I think Abbott's actions can be explained by his previous involvement in boxing (didn't he get a Rhodes Scholarship to study Boxing at Oxford (Boxford?)).
His ministerial career is on the ropes having suffered an almost knockout blow in 2015. He's got nothing to lose in terms of returning to the Ministry. He's either going to punch his way back to power, if he happens to land a blow on Turnbull's Achilles heel, or otherwise he'll simply go down swinging and bring the whole party down with him.

Going on those grades Abbott probably thought this was the daytime version of the old fashioned night-cart.
