Goodfellas is a brilliant movie, I can watch it over and over and never get tired of it.

While you're on the mobster theme, 'The Irishman' is a good flick. It's based on a book written about Jimmy Hoffa. I only watched because Pacino and De Niro are in it, but it was quite enjoyable (3.5 hours long!!) over a couple of nights.[/quote]

Yes completely agree. I'm a fan of them all, but his portrayal earnt the biggest tick from moi.

On a totally unrelated note, finally got around to watching Bohemian Rhapsody .. Very enjoyable flick, and would think most from a similar era would feel the same. Some of the graphics of the Live Aid action looked notably off the mark, but thats about all I could fault (and that didn't really harm the film imho). As most have said, Malek was outstanding as Freddie.

Really enjoyed The Irishman. I thought Pacino was pretty ordinary though. Godfather III was when he went to shit as an actor and he has been ordinary ever since IMO

I enjoyed The Irishman, by and large (the main cast are excellent - Pesci's understated performance is very impressive), but I found the pacing way too slow. As an aside, I was also baffled by occasional writing on the screen that told me who certain bit-part characters were and how they were eventually executed, as if it was important to the story, but really just amounted to unnecessary mobster trivia.

As one reviewer I read said, is it one hour better than Goodfellas? Worth a look, especially if you dig mobster films, and as others have said, do it in installments.

That said, I learnt plenty about the whole Jimmy Hoffa thing. My understanding was limited to a teamster boss that Americans referred to when emphasising something that couldn't be located (i.e. 'you've got more chance of finding Jimmy Hoffa than x'), a bit like Harold Holt.

Gotta say Mags, my summation pretty much mirrors yours - In fact with one exception (I enjoyed the writing explaining who/what/where), I{'d say exactly matches.

It's definitely not legendary like Goodfellas or Casino, but enjoyable enough for anyone keen on the genre.

Watched the new Joker film on the weekend.... Absolutely loved it!!! Phoenix was amazing... Never thought i'd ever have empathy for the joker.

Finally got around to watching it and just finished it, it's a pretty full on film, exactly the way the character of Joker is. Phoenix was very, very good not just as the Joker but his whole character of Arthur Fleck. I found it alot more compelling than I thought I would.

I can't remember loving the start of a film more than I did watching the start of 1917 with the soldiers in the trenches, the way it was shot was just so immersive and gave you no time to look away or zone out of what was happening on screen. The second half of the film is a bit messy but as whole it is a great film mainly because of the way it's shot. It really gives you a sense of how horrible trench warfare was.
