I am sick of getting told how much I should be enjoying a product by people that don't even buy or have an interest in buying that product.

It seems the SANFL would prefer to listen to people that admire the SANFL from afar than those that actually still attend the games
. How exactly are those people generating income for the SANFL clubs?

Well put!!!
It's like introducing shiny, non-absorbent toilet paper to all supermarkets and after no one buys it, praising it up because it's so shiny now.
Meanwhile you are still using the extra soft, rose-scented variety because no one wants to wipe their bum with shiny, non-absorbent toilet paper. But you still insist that other people should.

 that is one "off the beaten track" analogy TRB ;)

Safer to use rocks in that situation mate.

Rising Power wrote:So on the whole I'd say crowds were pretty consistent post-power and pre-AFL reserves, apart from that one year Sturt got the bandwagon out.

Based on all that, I reckon average crowds of around 3100 would be a pass mark.

Fair call, looking at the table again the numbers bobbed around between 2.8k and 3.2k over that time but there were a few consecutive years where it was under 3k which is probably the bit that I focused on.

Yes unfortunately crowd figures can be distorted to suit different agendas.

If you look at the Crows and the Power home and away averages prior to half a billion dollars being injected by the stage government, you would have noticed a consistent decline in Crows crowds from 38k in 2005 to 30k in 2011 and Port Power 31.7K in in 2004 to 20.6k in 2012. Home games the crows were 42K in 2005 dropping to 34K in 2013 and Port Power 33K in 2005 dropping to 20K in 2012.

Historically the SANFL punched well above its weight. In the pinnacle year of 1980, 900,000 went to SANFL home and away rounds and 200,000 to the finals - 85% of the states population.

With the Crows and Power averaging about 45k per week at the moment for 20 home games, that equates to 900,000. With the potential for say 2 finals it will be around the 1,000,000 mark or about 60% of the population.

If the SANFL had not f*cked the comp up, it could have been targeting crowds like 2008 with a total of 362K, which with the AFL crowds would be 80% of the population.

On average 400 people less a game

400x $11 concession entry =4400 x 10 home games =$44000 less

Never mind the rest which is lost over the clubrooms, bars and canteen from having on average 400 less

Very rough figures but that 50k isn't looking like such a great deal now

And this is it, the final figures for 2015 compared to 1997 through to 2014. At least we have a nice app that people with capable phones can use now

Will be under 2k next year, many others like myself are ready to walk. In the group of 8 I go with regularly 6 have already decided they are out. Myself and one other are uncomitted as yet, waiting to see if Port win it. Between the 8 of us we spent approx $40k at the club on memberships, player sponsors etc

Once again I ask, what business looks to ensure its future by alienating and actively driving away its core customers?

At the GFC information night I asked a question along the lines of "why don't you consider admitting the Blows into the reserves competition initially, with the potential to elevate them to league ranks in the next year if it worked out"?

The Glenelg delegate's answer was all to succinct: "The Blows don't want that." Next question.

Clearly the delegates no longer see the club members and fans as its core customers *. Rather, they see the Blows, and by extension the Smears, as the clients which must be catered to. With this in mind, I think that the SANFL is satisfying its (perceived) core customers all too well.

My favourite part of the GFC "information night" was when a member asked the president along the lines of "Isn't it your job to do what's right & the best thing for the club?"
Chigwidden replied "It's my responsibility to do the right thing for the league".
It was at that point we knew we were wasting our f#cking time and been taken for suckers.

thats virtually word for word what Bodhan said at the north info night. "im voting in my capacity as league delegate, so have to vote what is best for the league, not in my capacity as North President" or something like that. they were all obviously reading from the same playbook.....

I had many a conversation with Chiggy at the time. The clubs were scared the SANFL would become irrelevant. Well guess what it is going to become irrelevant anyway. Sure there is probably more interest in the league now, but from people that like to read about how their reserves side went. This extra interest is not resulting in bums on seats and money for the clubs. It's resulting in extra hits on their app and website and increased TV ratings because the Reserves sides get an unfair amount of TV coverage. Considering the SANFL pay for the TV coverage, please explain how this is resulting in money for the clubs?

As crowds drop off and clubs can't afford to pay what they once could for players the standard will drop even further. How relevant will the league be then?

Well done Chiggy you signed your own clubs death warrant.
