Saw a couple of weeks back now that the Japanese have admitted to having talks and making a deal with Abbott and co before the story went public.
But the talks weren't secret.
Now if no one knew about them except the Japanese and Australian inner circle of politics, that sounds pretty secret to me...
The Japanese have commented that they are rather put out by all these other countries bidding for the job now, but they will do their best to adjust to the new set of circumstances (or whatever neutralising slant they put on it, I can't remember word for word but that's the gist)
Anyone else remember that story?
I'm gonna sit back, crack the top off a Pale Ale, and watch the Double Blues prevail

Funny how ASC can now pull a profit due to "improving workforce and construction productivity"
Nothing like the threat of closing it down to improve productivity
There is so much hypocrisy flying around.
When it was said the Japs would get the build, everyone was $hitbagging their sub (just look back though these pages) but the main $hitbaggers were Weatherill and Hamilton-Smith. Weatherill wanted a tender otherwise how would we know which one was best (he seems to forget about Gillman excuse) and if the Japs wouldn't tender, then too bad (cue Gillman hypocrisy again)
Now Hamilton-Smith says the jap sub is the best and it shouldn't even go to tender.

If its all Tony Abbott's fault then, at least he's got the ASC workers off their asses and working

In regards of ASC South- Lol you know nothing of our work ethic. The threat of the place closing down has really got nothing to do with the increased productivity, the company has just become efficient and organised more as the project has matured. Of course this had to happen to save the company money and it's gone well.

This profit though (which is both ships and subs) is interesting, I'm sure we will find out more about it in the coming days. We had production meeting today and the question about the profit was asked, didn't get much feedback.

Wasn't me who commented on the work ethic. It was Hamilton-Smith:
"State Defence Industries Minister Martin Hamilton-Smith said the ASC productivity improvements demonstrated sound management, a skilled workforce and competitive contractors"
But I will accept it is just a coincidence if that's all it is
The Annual report will be interesting

Found this TDK:
It's now reporting significant improvements, with a 30 per cent productivity boost on ship two and a further 10 per cent on ship three. - See more at: http://www.skynews.com.au/business/busi ... d3O9t.dpuf

What you mean after the then defense minister bagged out ASC massively and worked a scare campaign so that they could easily go offshore for these?

Or when they massively back tracked due to the huge disconnect the Liberals were able to develop with SA?

Just a question there mate, are you Bolt by any chance?

This article seems interesting. The key words are as always "Could" but hopefully a large portion of the work is done in SA.
SA needs this with the impeding Holden crash starting to rear its head.

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries chief Shunichi Miyanaga says Japan can build all future submarines in Australia
JAPAN would be very willing to build future submarines wholly in Australia if it wins the multi-billion dollar project, says the chief of the global firm spearheading its bid.

Speaking after touring Osborne-based ASC today, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries president Shunichi Miyanaga praised the construction expertise developed there throughout the two-decade Collins Class submarine project.

Asked if preferred to build submarines wholly in Australia or in both Japan and Australia, Mr Miyanaga said: “If it is the Australian government and the Australian people’s hope to be constructed fully we will be very much willing to contribute to that kind of construction, so whole construction in Australia.”

Japan, Germany and France last November lodged final bids for the submarine contract as part of a competitive evaluation process. The government says it will choose a winning bidder by the middle of the year.

Building Australia’s future submarines would be a “symbolic project” for his company, he said, because of the Japanese government’s decision last year to allow defence industry exports.

Mr Miyanaga, also the company’s chief executive officer, said he believed ASC’s workforce and technology were equipped for an Adelaide build.

Engineers, welders and other workers would require skills and technology development to build Japan’s modified Soryu Class submarine but Mr Miyanaga said he did not foresee any difficulties.

Mr Miyanaga said he hoped to discuss soon with the Federal Government whether eight or 12 submarines would be built.

The Mitsubishi conglomerate chief, whose company’s 12.6 per cent is the largest single shareholding in former Adelaide car manufacturer Mitsubishi Motors, declined to comment on whether South Australian or Western Australian naval shipyards were better.

WA is considered a strong threat to secure a $5 billion Offshore Patrol Vessel contract, which the Government had earmarked for Adelaide.

“This area the Adelaide area has a very long history and Western Australia is very close to the naval base,” Mr Miyanaga said.

He said the Australian construction site should be chosen by the Government based on job creation, costs and economic growth policies.
