There's only two measures really, average for the numbers guru's and appeal to the eye for the lovers of the craft and he'll never be #1 for either so....

28 years old, 62 tests, 6113 runs @ 63.67, could he run Sachin down? Basically needs around 1200 a year for the next 9 years.

Smith is 28 ( 29 in June ).

We play around 10 or 11 Tests per year.

He averages 63 > 126 per Test.

126 x 11 = 1386

1386 x 5 years = 6930

6930 + 6113 = 13,043

IF he keeps this form up IF he plays for 5 more years he'll not quite get Ponting.

This day and age he's a strong chance to play on until mid 30's, but it's harder to see him maintaining a 60+ average over such a sustained period.

He'll play longer than 5 years I'd think, Rogers was just breaking into the team older than 33.

He's got a filly he's just married, about to go 29, plays ODI's, Tests, IPL...he'll be out of the game by 35.

One thing to note booney - he has actually been averaging much higher than 63 in his last few years

In his last four years he has scored 4752 runs at 76.64

thats actually incredible. as silly as it sounds we could be underestimating him just because of the start he had to his career

63 is his average per completed innings. Doubling it does not get his average runs per test, as there are a number of times he either doesn't bat twice or more importantly, remains not out in an innings.

Smith has scored 6100ish runs over 62 tests. That is, he averages approx. 98 per test.

Mate, you sorta remind me of Morrell, except your stats make sense!

I agree, I was merely extrapolating the data to give a "best case" estimate of how many career runs he may end up with.

And that average per Test is greater than any on the list from bennymaccas screenshot...except for the Don.
He is not my favourite skipper (S. Waugh for mine), nor the best to watch (Ricky), but despite all his quirks he has the same passion, and bloody-mindedness that typifies the greats.

I'll still take AB as my number 1. He saved our arse as a cricketing nation almost singlehandedly.

This is potentially an attack that Starc might get a few against, seamers and a left arm tweaker spinning the ball into him.

This pitch may be dead most of the time but it is inconsistent. Saffers have bowled too short- Even Vernon hasn't made blokes play the pill enough. I hope we don't make the same mistake.

Been a real grind this morning and with the two wickets it's advantage South Africa but with Marsh still there, 54 not out we're still in good stead.

These boys are overthinking things way too much!

Graeme Smith is talking absolute shit. Reckons Saffer pitches are dead and started talking about decks with characteristics like Sydney, Adelaide and the Gabba. Here's a tip boys.... pitch the ******* thing up and Australia would be out for 225. We just came from a series where 250 in SA was a good score.

Not a ragung seamer though which is strange. Honestly we are crap if the ball js moving so why prepare a deck that will us competitive?

Absolutely. Put some grass on the pitch or make the deck softer.
