You only need to look at the nett worth of some of these feckers who have done no other meaningful work.

I will only believe that politics is truly a civil service when the politicians are not paid other than for proven out of pocket expenses.
I know of no other industry where people can earn $200k - $300k, with no qualifications or experience, and worse still: no liability

I'm inclined to agree that some politicians are only in it for the money and that they don't produce much, but some are in it to push there own and associates agendae, and some are there trying to genuinely do good. My brother-in-law is one of the latter group though I find him a bit conservative and we don't agree on some issues.

On the other hand, overcome by idealism, I toyed with entering state politics back in about 1990 with Alexander Downer's backing. However my then wife (now deceased) did not want to be a politician's wife and thus public property, and she expressed the view that because of my idealism I would become frustrated with the compromises I'd have to make, and then become "Hell to live with." It came down to politics or keeping the wife. In the end I chose the latter partly because I thought she was right about the frustration factor.

Ideally, I think nobody should be able to dive into politics without having worked for at least 10 years in the outside world and that they should have to step down after 2 or 3 terms. (In the pre-empire days in ancient Rome, Senators had to quit and go back to their farms after 2 terms.)

Labor only had 16 years in power to sort it out yet here we are and somehow Marshall is terrible for not being able to fix it in 3 years in the middle of a global pandemic.
