Mate, that was absolutely disgraceful, no excuse whatsoever.Hack wrote:Not saying it’s ‘acceptable’, but there have been very few clubs I’ve played at where I haven’t copped plenty from the sidelines while playing.
Most perplexing was always the St Peter’s crowd throwing barbs at players while drinking around their sideline wine bar in their polo tops. In respect to them they didn’t get too personal unlike many other club’s faithful. I just don’t think too many clubs can sit in their ivory tower on the issue.

This is actually a great topic.
Copping some great sprays is part of footy, hopefully most laugh it off if it doesn't cross racial/family lines. Haven't seen the footage in question so not specifically talking about that.
Some of the best ones came at me at PNU, Salisbury North, CBC and Eastern Park from memory.

I’m not saying there is. What I am saying is this is a lot more common than people think, and until something serious gets done about it, it will continue.Lightning McQueen wrote:Mate, that was absolutely disgraceful, no excuse whatsoever.Hack wrote:Not saying it’s ‘acceptable’, but there have been very few clubs I’ve played at where I haven’t copped plenty from the sidelines while playing.

There are some clubs who have been threatened with serious fines if anyone at their home games (whether associated with the club or not) do something unacceptable like that. But to this point it’s all been slap on the wrist stuff, hence it is still ongoing.
At some point an example needs to be set, and clubs will suddenly become more accountable. There are clubs in the SAAFL who have already banned certain ‘supporters’ from their games to stop this kind of stuff.
Whenever this stuff happens there are so many bystanders who enable it by doing nothing about it.

As an umpire I've copped a few decent ones too, then I look over and it's some dude sitting on about 120kgs with a beer in one hand and a pie in the other, it makes it bloody easy.Pag wrote:This is actually a great topic.

I've never minded a bit of banter from the players too, it's to and fro and I've never sent anyone off from it, I'm quick witted and good with a return payout.
A personal favourite of mine came after I paid a downfield free against a bloke that I had told a few times to stop with the late shit. A voice from behind me said "You're f****** shit umpire" I turned around and looked at who I thought said it and replied with "Yeah, and your two kicks have gone straight to the opposition".
He then replied "No worries, you're not far wrong" as a few of them had a chuckle, given it was midway through the 3rd it held extra merit, we had a laugh over a beer afterwards.
Craig Taylor and Justin Cicolella had strong banter, both exceptional players and were never short with giving advice.

Some of our boys were singing to Blackfriars on the weekend about their lack of clubrooms and that they nearly became a swimming pool. Was quite humorous.

My favourite when I used to umpire when a player was having a whinge was to tell them to worry about getting a kick as I'd had more of it than them! That tended to get a laugh and generally shut them up for a bit.Lightning McQueen wrote:As an umpire I've copped a few decent ones too, then I look over and it's some dude sitting on about 120kgs with a beer in one hand and a pie in the other, it makes it bloody easy.Pag wrote:This is actually a great topic.

The Mound Men from Kilburn were legendary back in the day
The most obnoxious and just plain dumb were those who perched themselves on the balcony at PNU
Sals West had a fair share of loudmouths when they were up n about
Eastern Park were 'interesting'

Statler & Waldorf that placed themselves up on the Hectorville balcony just above the visitors coaches box used to get under the skin of anyone who ventured there.stealthbomber wrote:The Mound Men from Kilburn were legendary back in the day

I played juniors at Payneham (well before the P & NU merger) and at one home game I can't remember who it was against, but they had an indigenous lad who was an absolute star and just killed us.stealthbomber wrote:The Mound Men from Kilburn were legendary back in the day

I will always remember the disgusting racist comments directed to him during the entire match. As you know, you can hear balcony comments from a lot of the ground.
This lad didn't bat an eyelid whilst he danced around us all.
If this behaviour happened today, those blokes would have been banned for life.

The biggest one I got was at St Peters, from a female near the scoreboard. Her swear word vocabulary would’ve put a shearer in the shade. She really let loose. The reason; I glanced at the scoreboard at half time. Hey everyone has their issues, she might’ve lost a charm from her bracelet, or scratched the merc in the car park. Whatever it was it made me laugh.Hack wrote:Not saying it’s ‘acceptable’, but there have been very few clubs I’ve played at where I haven’t copped plenty from the sidelines while playing.
Most perplexing was always the St Peter’s crowd throwing barbs at players while drinking around their sideline wine bar in their polo tops. In respect to them they didn’t get too personal unlike many other club’s faithful. I just don’t think too many clubs can sit in their ivory tower on the issue.

Haha yeah sounds familiar. Most places if you bite back wondering if they’ll follow you to the carpark, in that instance more likely to receive a legal letter in the mail haha.laser wrote:The biggest one I got was at St Peters, from a female near the scoreboard.
