I'm still not convinced Mead is in your best 23. One good game against the Richmond punching bags and that's it.

He's a far better proposition than the options behind him in the SANFL.wenchbarwer wrote:I'm still not convinced Mead is in your best 23. One good game against the Richmond punching bags and that's it.
Hugh Jackson - We're into our 4th year of that experiment that's been a waste of time
Will Lorenz - He's been over taken by Moraes in one summer
The rest of our SANFL midfield is not AFL listed, Moore, McLennan, Watkins...
If you want to go quickly, go alone.
If you want to go far, go together.
If you want to go far, go together.

Re: PAFC 2025
Ive heard, from people that would know, that Port are playing a game style very similar to North in 2018, indicating that its Carr's game plan with Hinkley coaching it, going to be a facinating watch to see if they continue with it or bin it.Booney wrote: Lists are built to play a certain way, for 10 years Port have played contested ball to kick long to the front half ( Dixon ) and lock it in grinding opposition down with repeated entries and playing front half footy. Seemingly in one summer we're piggy backed onto the likes of Hawthorn and GWS who look to move the ball by hand and open up space in the front half with running patterns the game hasn't seen much of until the last 18 months. Thing is our list isn't built for that.

Why would they be using an outdated game plan?Dutchy wrote:Ive heard, from people that would know, that Port are playing a game style very similar to North in 2018, indicating that its Carr's game plan with Hinkley coaching it, going to be a facinating watch to see if they continue with it or bin it.Booney wrote: Lists are built to play a certain way, for 10 years Port have played contested ball to kick long to the front half ( Dixon ) and lock it in grinding opposition down with repeated entries and playing front half footy. Re: PAFC 2025
Interesting review Booney. i haven't watched many games this year due to other commitments, but at the game yesterday clearly seemed a game plan focused on run + gun and link up through handball ala Hawks.
The balance though between when to handball and when to kick / run was way off and often the handball just invited more pressure.
Fundamental skill errors were the big killer - dropped marks, kicks out on the full, balls smothered.
Couple things stood out to me - Midfield got slapped. Butters (and Rozee to an extent) have an obsession with bouncing the ball, often burning options up the ground. Was a couple times Georgiades led up hard, or Rioli was in space and they opted for a bounce instead of delivering.
Speaking of Rioli, felt like he stood unmanned for most of the game, but the ability to actually either see him, or give him the ball was not there. One stage in the 2nd qtr he must've spent a good 90 seconds to 2min standing inside F50 without an oppo in sight..
St Kilda though play that typical negative Ross Lyon style, pushing numbers hard behind the ball, so little surprise really that Port struggled inside 50 at times when the Saints were often +2 inside F50.
Lachie Jones is poo.

Yeah, I noticed that period as well. The Bedge wrote:Speaking of Rioli, felt like he stood unmanned for most of the game, but the ability to actually either see him, or give him the ball was not there. One stage in the 2nd qtr he must've spent a good 90 seconds to 2min standing inside F50 without an oppo in sight.
He was all alone in the 50, some 80-100m off the ball.
St Kilda instead pushed up, pressured the ball carrier and ensured the ball turned over.
Georgie also slipped out the back for a period on that play as well, leaving us effectively 2 short at the contest.
Yes, the overuse of the handball, especially when our forwards were 'slutting out the back of the contest' just meant we got swarmed inside the small bubble and rarely had the opportunity to make the ground big and create space to work within. The Bedge wrote:The balance though between when to handball and when to kick / run was way off and often the handball just invited more pressure.
I also think the Hawks smalls are quicker, smarter, work harder, and have better skilled players getting them the ball. They don't wait out the back all that much, they get out the back after the ball has been won, and they get that space by reacting quicker and working harder.
The saving grace is two years ago hawks started 0-5 (i think). So it takes a bit of time for this style to click.
I don't think we are anywhere near the level of the hawks, or even have the capacity to get near them, but at least there is hope this plan might click for us to a degree, and it won't be this bad all season.
These three, plus Finlayson's struggles, has really left us short of the link between back and forward.Booney wrote:(Dixon's offf season departure and) the loss of Marshall and Lukosius sent the summers plans into disarray.
A lot of that pressure we were under in the mids was due to handballs missing the target, slightly behind the player, etc, but equally, a lot of the time when we connected up and got the ball into the guy with space, he didn't have a target to hit at that 60-90m range from goal.
It seemed both Lord and Georgie wanted to be the man inside 50, and we couldn't get a high half-forward to present.
No simple fix, going to just be our turn to be the easybeats for a while.

With that in mind what do us experts think Rioli should have done:
1. Pushed up the ground and not let the Saints have the extra defender. Had they won the ball Rioli then beats them on the way back.
2. Stayed as he was but communication should have meant Port tried to work around the extra man
3. Something else.
Would be interesting to know what the Port coaching direction in that situation would be... could be considered extremely smart or extremely lazy.
